Five motorcyclists were killed near San Diego on Saturday in what one California Highway Patrol officer describes as the most devastating accident scenes she's witnessed. The wreck occurred when a Honda Civic attempted to pass a group of riders, causing an oncoming Dodge Avenger to collide head-on with the pack of riders. Six others also suffered serious injuries.
The riders-- members of the Lakeside, California based Saddletramps Motorcycle Club-- were celebrating the club's 10th anniversary by riding through the desert on their Harley-Davidsons. The driver of the Avenger, 36 year-old Carlos Ramirez Bobadilla, was arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence five hours after the accident, though police say he is "not being held responsible for the deaths based on evidence collected so far."
Bobadilla's speedometer was stuck at 60 mph after the accident, 5 mph below the speed limit. With the driver of the Honda Civic still unidentified, CHP officers say they will check video surveillance feeds at the nearby border in case the driver fled to Mexico.
